Sustainability interns come from a wide variety of academic concentrations and work on numerous projects throughout their time with the Office of Sustainability & Resiliency.

Axel Brito
My name is Axel, I’m a junior studying Political Science, Sociology, and Educational Studies. I’m working towards getting my masters in Education post graduate at Brown to continue serving the Providence community. I currently volunteer at schools and libraries within the local community.

Allie Chandler
Allie is a junior studying materials science and engineering. Among other projects, she is working on analyzing and reducing energy usage from fume hoods on campus. Allie also helps run an environmental science and justice program at the Met high school and is involved with perovskite solar cell research on campus. She enjoys baking, word puzzles, and trying different coffee shops.

Andrew Kim
Andrew is a senior studying biology with a focus in ecology and conservation. They will be helping develop and implement the Environmental Justice Action Plan with the help of internal and external stakeholders. They hope to collaborate with the Brown and Providence community to ensure that the Sustainability Strategic Plan works equitably and considers marginalized communities. Andrew is also an EEOB DUG leader and helps run the Brown Beekeeping Society. Their hobbies include songwriting, skating, hardcore punk, and learning about animals.

Renee Oh
Renee is a junior studying Mathematics. This semester, she is working on communications, writing newsletters and managing social media at the Office of Sustainability and Resiliency. Renee is also involved in research in representational theory. In free time, Renee likes to knit, read, draw, and spend time with her cat Tofu.

Xinyi Wang
Xinyi is a second-year graduate student specializing in data science. She is dedicated to leveraging her data science skills and statistical tools to enhance the efficiency of sustainability project data processing. This semester, she aims to contribute to improving sustainability operations on campus through the implementation of living-labs and the creation of educational opportunities related to sustainability for the Brown community. During her leisure time, you can find Xinyi playing snare drums in the Brown University Band, swimming, skating, and spending time with friends.

Katie Chen
Katie is a rising junior concentrating in public health and biology passionate about mitigating climate health disparities. She is working on the Human Health section of the Sustainability Strategic Plan and the newsletter. In her spare time, you can find her reading, doing yoga, and crocheting.

Catherine Cheng
Catherine is a junior from Hong Kong concentrating in environmental science and international and public affairs. To learn more about multifaceted approaches to sustainability and climate change through community-based perspectives, she’s currently assisting with phase II of Brown’s Sustainability Strategic Plan. She also does research on atmospheric circulation in DEEPS, drinks a lot of coffee and enjoys going on long walks.

Anna Deitcher
Anna is a junior concentrating in business economics and environmental studies on the Sustainability and Development track. As an intern with the Office of Sustainability, she is working with Dining Services to reduce food waste and implement a shift toward more sustainable food purchases. Outside of environmental initiatives and academics, Anna is a member of the Brown rugby team and works at the Blue Room Cafe. When not at work or practice, you can find her exploring Providence or running on the East Bay Bike Path.

Hannah Fernandez
Hannah is a senior concentrating in public health. She is passionate about reducing health disparities, especially those that are worsened by environmental factors. This semester, she will be working on research for a red list for Brown’s Sustainability Strategic Plan as well as other human health related goals. In her free time, you can find Hannah crocheting, reading, or watching stand-up comedy.

DeeAnn Guo
DeeAnn is a senior concentrating in neuroscience. She is working on a virtual sustainability tour, waste marketing materials, and some research for JEDI. She loves compost and words that rhyme.

Anabelle Johnston
Anabelle is a sophomore intending to concentrate in literary arts and history. She is interested in pursuing environmental education and promoting environmental equality and will be assisting with the Office of Sustainability’s newsletter initiative. When not participating in environmental initiatives, she can be found reading in one of the campus greenhouses, making vegan mac-and-cheese, or bumbling around Providence.

Maryam Khademi
Maryam is a sophomore concentrating in Business Economics and Data Fluency certificate. She is passionate about crafting ethical and data-driven solutions as well as understanding the human stories behind every statistic. This Fall, she will be working on analyzing and visualizing power usage data to identify patterns and optimization opportunities as well as contributing to planning for 2024 programs such as Earth Week and Clean Break. In her free time, Maryam loves cooking Persian dishes, working out at Nelson, and watering her Philodendrons.

Melissa Lopez
Melissa is a senior at Brown concentrating in environmental science. She is developing the office newsletter and prioritizing waste audits around campus. In her free time, you can find Melissa running, baking or looking at maps.

Andrea Malpica
Andrea is a senior concentrating in Environmental Science with a focus on Air, Climate, and Energy. She led the first Winter Donation Drive last year which donates clothing to first-generation and low-income students in need while diverting waste from the landfill. She also works on transportation education, developing and encouraging green modes on transportation. During her free time, she enjoys vegan food, making new friends, working out, and exploring!

Emily Nomura
Emily is a second-year graduate student in Data Science. As an undergraduate at Brown, she concentrated in Applied Mathematics, tutored at Hope High School, and mentored for the Matched Advising Program for Sophomores and the Applied Mathematics department. This summer she will be working on tracking and visualizing composting, dining, and spending data. Emily enjoys playing basketball, gaming, and writing Yelp reviews of new restaurants.

Arden Reynolds
Arden is a sophomore studying English and planning to go into education. One of her major goals before and during her teaching career involves creating a sustainable environment that can support her students (and everyone else). As such, she has been involved with sustainability campaigns since middle school and continues to do sustainability work at Brown through the internship program and more. Beyond environmental initiatives, Arden enjoys teaching, reading, playing the French horn, and running.

Lenika Rivas Sanchez
Lenika is a sophomore concentrating in Environmental Studies with a focus on Environment and Inequality. As an intern with the Office of Sustainability, she will be working with the Energy Conservation Committee to come up with news to provide Brown's students with energy education. She will also be assisting the office with the new Waste Plan Initiative. Beyond her environmental activism, Lenika enjoys hiking, watching indie films, and participating in her Latinx community.

Julia Rothfield
Julia is a senior concentrating in Environmental Science with a focus on Air, Climate, and Energy. She's currently working on the Sustainability Showdown panels and the Reframing Sustainability campaign, which seeks to show everyone in the Brown community how they are part of making the world sustainable. In her free time, she loves leading trips for the Brown Outing Club and baking all kinds of desserts.

Hwan Seet
TzuHwan (Hwan) is a junior concentrating in economics and computer science. As someone who is passionate about responsible use of data to inform policy decisions, he works closely with the data scientist of the Office of Sustainability in tracking the University's greenhouse gas footprint, among other things. During his free time, Hwan loves to simply wind down with a delicious cup of coffee and read.

Daniel Traver
Daniel is the Office of Sustainability's energy intern. A senior studying environmental engineering, he is interested in renewable energy technologies, energy efficiency, and sustainable design. He loves to play guitar, sing, enjoys a good game of Mario Baseball on GameCube, and is a proud member of The Brown Derbies.

Isa Von Dehl
Isabela is a sophomore student who’s passionate about sustainability and environmental activism. She’s currently working to develop a newsletter template and use social media to promote different programs for the Office of Sustainability. She’s also working on creating and implementing a marketing plan for Brown Dining. In her free time, Isabela loves reading, dancing, and making new friends!

Ruitian Yan
Ruitian is a senior concentrating in Environmental Science- Air Climate and Energy track. She is co-leading the office's Clean Break donation program which partners with local organizations in need while diverting waste from our landfill. When Ruitian is not interning in the office, you can spot her everywhere- diving in the compost bins, climbing up a tree, covered in dirt on the city farm, dashing in the rain... And she can’t live without new things!

Katie Yetter
Katie is a second-year Cognitive Neuroscience Concentrator, Resumed Undergraduate Education student, and student Veteran. Originally growing up in Indiana, then living in Connecticut, Katie is well-versed in the 4-H Program, as well as the National FFA Program. Katie is passionate about the environment, as well as the Farm-to-Table program, where local agriculture and daily meals coincide. Her other interests include going to the gym, listening to music, and riding motorcycles.

Gulsima Young
Gulsima is a graduate student in the Master of Public Affairs program at Brown specializing in Advocacy & Change. Before moving to Providence, Gulsima studied at the University of Washington where she earned degrees in Environmental Studies and Informatics. While at UW, she enjoyed working as the Project Development Specialist for the Campus Sustainability Fund where she provided support for student-led initiatives contributing to environmental justice, social equity, and community resilience on campus. Gulsima is interested in the intersection of social, environmental, and health policy. She was born in Karaganda, Kazakhstan, and grew up in Pullman, Washington.
I got to work and make friends with people across years and disciplines. It is empowering to have a community dedicated to promoting sustainability on campus.
