Sustainability and Resiliency

Organization and Governance

Oversight by the University’s executive administrative leadership is one core element of ensuring vigilance and persistence in the University’s sustained efforts to meet its objectives. Brown has established a model for accountable governance that leverages Brown’s existing strengths and personnel.

Office of Sustainability

The Office of Sustainability (OS) provides campus-level, administrative vision, leadership and direction on University sustainability priorities. OS works closely with the Office of the Provost to ensure sustainability initiatives compliment the academic mission and engage student learning.

Office of the Provost

The associate provost for sustainability in the Office of the Provost collaborates with the Office of Sustainability to bridge the gap between academics, research and operations, and provides insight and perspective on sustainability priorities and collaboration across academic and operational areas.

Sustainability Strategic Plan Steering Committee

The Sustainability Strategic Plan steering committee serves as a goal-setting and accountability body, with broad representation of staff, students and faculty, that regularly reviews progress within each of the objectives outlined in Brown’s Sustainability Strategic Plan and recommends new goals to the University’s executive leadership. The steering committee is co-chaired by the director of the Office of Sustainability, associate provost for sustainability and other faculty and staff as needed.

The breadth of membership of this committee, together with a designated member focused on environmental equity and social justice, will ensure that the specific goals within each objective represent the values of the Brown community, and that relevant campus units are held accountable for progress on these goals.
