From increasing energy efficiency and reducing emissions to recycling and composting to greener buildings and beyond, Brown’s Office of Sustainability and Resiliency is tasked with helping the University achieve its aggressive sustainability and resiliency goals.
Brown is committed to achieving sustained energy and environmental performance and strategic long-term sustainability and resiliency through ongoing integrated and systematic approaches.
The office is guided by our mission statement:
Brown University's Office of Sustainability and Resiliency (OSR) develops and implements strategies to enable the community to flourish in the face of a changing climate and other sustainability challenges. We focus on reducing the University’s environmental footprint while building campus resiliency and the ability to adapt to current and future environmental changes. The office works closely with campus and community partners on a variety of topics such as decarbonization, nitrogen pollution, healthier materials, energy efficiency, and equity and inclusion. We connect with the mission of the University by using our campus as a living laboratory for education and innovation. Our goal is to establish a model of sustainability and resiliency for Brown and beyond.
The Office of Sustainability and Resiliency works with senior leaders to establish the University's sustainability goals, while working with students, faculty, staff and other partners to achieve them. Our responsibility spans the physical campus — energy efficiency, greenhouse gas reduction, waste reduction and diversion, electric vehicle charging stations or hydration stations — to education efforts that engage the entire Brown community in the University’s sustainability and resiliency commitments.
The Office of Sustainability and Resiliency is supported by eight staff members, as well as a team of undergraduate student interns. For general inquiries, please email sustainability@brown.edu.
