Waste Sorting Guidance
Explore best practices for sorting and donating different types of waste in Rhode Island.
Recycling
- Metal cans, lids, and foil
- Glass bottles & jars (recycle metal lid separately)
- Paper, cardboard, & cartons
- Plastic containers (attach bottle caps & container lids)
All containers must be empty. Please rinse whenever possible.
- Plastic bags
- Straws
- Utensils
- Food or liquids
- Tissues or paper towels
Compost
- Food scraps
- Potable liquids
- Uncoated paper goods
- Wood and bamboo dinnerware
- Tea and coffee grounds, bags, and filters
- Wax paper
- Bioplastics
- Coffee cups
- Paper cups or containers with coated lining
Trash
These items are often considered recyclable or compostable, but they must be disposed of in regular trash.
- Soft plastic such as bags, bubble wrap, and food wrappers
- Flat plastic including utensils, straws, hangers, bottle caps, and drink lids
- Coated foil & Styrofoam wrappers and containers
- Bioplastics that are labelled compostable cannot be composted by our local organic waste haulers
- Paper cups or containers with coated lining
