Sustainability and Resiliency

Biking

Healthy transportation with zero emissions.

Biking is a great way to get around town and across Brown’s campus. With new bike lanes popping up in Providence and a myriad of bike paths winding through scenic Rhode Island, now is a great time to break that bike out of storage.

Before hopping on your bike, take a look at a few of the training resources we have available to you. Our City Biking 101 training and biking video provide tips on how to safely ride in an urban setting, including making turns, using hand signals, and how to put your bike on the shuttle or bus.

You can find more information on bike rules, lanes, and routes at the Rhode Island Department of Transportation.

Bike Racks and Showers

Improving biking infrastructure on campus is a priority at Brown. All new buildings on campus incorporate space for either outdoor or indoor bike storage. The majority of residence halls have bike rooms, and many buildings on campus have showers to rinse off after a bike ride.

Register Your Bicycle

To help ensure that your bike is safe when you leave it in one of the racks or storage rooms on campus, Register it with the Brown Department of Public Safety. Doing so makes it less susceptible to theft and increase likelihood of recovery.

Bike Repair

Just like a car, bikes will sometimes need some tweaks and repairs. If you are experiencing a small issue and it’s something you can fix on your own, look for one of the sidewalk repair stations on campus and throughout Providence or find one on the repair shop map.
